Initially, "The Drought" was inspired by witnessing the breakdown of a friend's relationship, but later I realized that it was really about the deterioration of my own 7-year relationship and that total loss of my identity. It took 2 years to finally end it. It’s in the last lines of the song that connect the dots for me ‘You leave me for dead’; They were added after a few months of singing and playing around with the arrangement of the song. I hadn’t realized until recently this song was actually about my own experience.
